Webinars series on biodiversity/nature approaches for companies

Topics covered: Legal and political framework, What about SMEs?, Frameworks, Nature Positive, Biodiversity Credit for Business, AI and the Internet of Things, Taking Action

🥇 Legal and political context

Corporate responsibility towards nature will continue to be an important topic. In the EU, possible changes to the CSRD are to be followed and in Switzerland, the Federal Council will announce how it intends to integrate the CSRD. In addition, a new popular initiative on the social and environmental responsibility of multinationals has been launched. Finally, Swiss citizens will already vote on the initiative “for an economy within the planetary boundaries” on 9 February.

🥈 And SMEs?

The beginnings of a movement within SMEs are being felt. Thus, the Sustainability Forum of the Vaud economy, on 27 February, will have a workshop on the theme of corporate biodiversity. Some cantons are preparing programmes specific to SMEs. In addition, some neighbouring countries will roll out specific support programmes for SMEs this year.

🕒 Frameworks for companies

The methodology developed by the TNFD has set a standard, regardless of the sector or the size of the company. In Switzerland as in the EU, it allows you to start your nature/biodiversity roadmap. In addition, the Entreprise & Biodiversité from @Orée is an impressive source of solutions to animate its roadmap.

4️⃣ Nature Positive

This approach has been clarified and can now be applied by companies. Some sectors have started to deal with this subject. Given the complexity of this approach, 2025 should show just how mature this concept is.

💳 Biodiversity credit for companies

This new offsetting tool has created a buzz in 2024. Without an international framework by governments, will this tool emerge from anecdotal use?

🧑🏼‍💻 AI and the Internet of Things

Web platform automating assessment and actions are multiplying. 2025 will surely see other offers that could lower the cost of entry for SMEs. It will also be a year of beta versions, because this market will follow the evolution of the legal frameworks.

🎬 Take action

Governments have set 2030 to halt biodiversity loss. Companies are moving forward in a scattered order. A lot of effort is invested to comply with the CSRD or to align with standards such as the GRI or SBTN. Fears are growing that these efforts will hide a lack of action in the coming years. 2025 will provide additional guidance to reinforce or reduce this fear. Indeed, the United Nations’ Global Biodiversity Framework already offers all the themes for action.
